Stitch placement guide

Basket weave

Use horizontal satin stitches or long-and-short bands in DMC 3828. Cross a few short vertical stitches in DMC 433 to suggest woven strips, then add DMC 898 only in the deepest gaps.

Basket rim and handle

Work the rim in split stitch or stem stitch with 2 strands. Add one highlight line of DMC 3828 on the upper edge and a darker DMC 433 line underneath for rounded form.

Large round flowers

Use satin stitch or fishbone-style petals, shading from DMC 3716 at the tips into DMC 761 or DMC 352 near the center. Keep petal direction radiating outward.

Yellow blossoms

Use lazy daisy petals with DMC 744 and 743. Put DMC 3823 or 712 on one side of each petal to keep the blossoms bright and soft.

Lavender accents

Use detached chain, small satin stitches, or French knots in DMC 340. Add tiny DMC 333 knots at the centers for depth without making the flowers too heavy.

Leaves and stems

Use stem stitch for stems in DMC 470, then fishbone or fly stitch leaves in DMC 3348 and 989. Alternate greens so the foliage looks lively rather than flat.

Thread-count guidance

  • Outlines: 1–2 strands for clean flower edges, basket rim, and handle definition.
  • Petals: 2 strands for most satin or long-and-short stitches; 1 strand for tiny filler flowers.
  • Basket: 2–3 strands where you want a raised woven feel; keep darker detail stitches to 1 strand.
  • French knots: 1 strand for delicate pollen, 2 strands for bold centers or berry-like accents.

Blending ideas

  • Blend one strand DMC 3716 with one strand DMC 761 for soft blush petals.
  • Blend DMC 744 with DMC 743 for yellow flowers that shift from pale to sunny.
  • Blend DMC 3348 with DMC 470 for fresh spring leaves with a slightly natural olive tone.
  • For a rustic basket, alternate DMC 3828 and DMC 433 every few woven bands.

Shading and texture

  1. Stitch the lightest flower areas first so darker centers can tuck neatly over them.
  2. Use long-and-short stitch sparingly on larger petals; too many color changes can make small flowers look busy.
  3. Keep the darkest browns inside basket recesses, not along every edge, for a softer spring look.
  4. Add scattered knots in cream, yellow, and violet to create the impression of small filler blossoms.

Beginner-friendly workflow

  1. Start with stems and main greenery to establish the bouquet shape.
  2. Fill larger flowers next, working from the back of the bouquet forward.
  3. Add tiny blossoms, knots, and petal centers after the big color blocks are complete.
  4. Finish with basket weave, rim, handle shadows, and final outline touch-ups.

Finishing tip

Press from the back on a folded towel so the basket texture, French knots, and raised floral centers are not flattened. For a soft heirloom look, leave a little breathing room between clusters instead of filling every gap with stitches.
