Sleeping Bear on the Moon
A polished embroidery color and stitching guide for a tender nursery-style hoop: a sleepy brown bear in lavender pajamas curled on a soft golden crescent moon, surrounded by fluffy clouds, tiny stars, hanging charms, and the stitched words “Sweet Dreams.”
Color story observed from the design
The design uses a soft bedtime palette. The crescent moon is the visual anchor: a warm buttery yellow filled with long, curved stitches that follow the moon’s arc. The sleeping bear is a medium warm brown with darker shading around the ears, paws, muzzle edge, and fur direction. The pajamas are muted lavender with pale lilac cuffs and a small pink collar.
White textured clouds and tiny pastel dots keep the composition airy. Small golden stars and hanging charm lines add a handmade celestial feel, while the dark “Sweet Dreams” lettering and closed eyes give just enough contrast to read clearly without breaking the gentle mood.
Recommended supplies
- 6-inch or 7-inch wooden hoop for a balanced nursery wall-art finish.
- Pale gray, ivory, oatmeal, or warm white cotton-linen fabric.
- No. 7 embroidery needle for 2–3 strands; chenille needle if using fluffy cloud texture.
- Water-soluble transfer pen for the lettering and tiny hanging details.
- Optional white cotton perle, wool thread, or turkey-work trimming for extra puffy clouds.
Polished DMC floss palette
These DMC colors are chosen to match the visible artwork: golden moon values, cinnamon-brown bear fur, creamy muzzle, lavender pajamas, pale pink collar, white clouds, and small celestial details. Adjust one step lighter or darker if your fabric is very dark or very warm.
Stitch plan by design area
| Area | Best stitches | Thread count |
|---|---|---|
| Crescent moon | Long-and-short stitch or closely packed split stitch, following the curve from inner edge to outer point. | 2 strands for fill; 1 strand for edge smoothing |
| Bear head and paws | Short directional straight stitches or split stitch to imitate fur. Work from the outside toward the face. | 2 strands; add 1-strand dark fur accents |
| Muzzle and ears | Small satin stitch or long-and-short stitch with soft beige, outlined sparingly. | 1–2 strands |
| Pajamas | Split stitch fill, satin stitch for cuffs, and back stitch for seams and folds. | 2 strands for fill; 1 strand for seams |
| Clouds | French knots, colonial knots, lazy loops, or detached chain clusters for raised fluff. | 3 strands or perle cotton |
| Stars, dots, charms | Straight stitch stars, French knots, and fine back stitch hanging lines. | 1–2 strands |
Thread-count guidance
- 1 strand: facial features, lettering, pajama seams, moon outline cleanup, tiny hanging strings, and small sparkle arms.
- 2 strands: most bear fur, pajama fill, moon fill, stars, and general back stitch outlines.
- 3 strands: clouds, larger French knots, thick star centers, and slightly raised charm dots.
- 4+ strands: use only for fluffy clouds or if the hoop has been enlarged; heavy thread can crowd the lettering.
Blending & shading ideas
Golden moon
Use DMC 744 across most of the moon, then blend 743 along the lower outer curve and near the thicker belly of the crescent. Add a few DMC 783 stitches at the lowest edge and at the pointed tips for a warm carved look.
Bear fur
Work the bear in short, radiating stitches rather than a flat satin fill. Use DMC 977 as the main fur color, 975 around the ears and paws, and just a few 898 strokes where the fur needs depth.
Lavender pajamas
Fill the pajamas with DMC 340, shade folds with 3740, and use 211 on cuffs, sleeve highlights, and button glints. Blend with short stitches following the sleeve and pant-leg direction.
Outlining details
- Use DMC 975 or 898 for bear contours instead of black; save DMC 310 for the eyes, nose, and tiny mouth.
- Outline the moon with one strand of DMC 743 or 783 after filling to sharpen the crescent shape.
- Keep pajama outlines soft with 3740, then add one-strand seam lines only where folds are visible.
- For the “Sweet Dreams” lettering, use one strand and tiny back stitches. Keep each stitch short around curves.
Texture suggestions
- Moon: smooth curved rows that follow the crescent arc.
- Bear: short uneven fur stitches with varied browns.
- Clouds: clustered knots or lazy loops for a raised, fluffy edge.
- Stars: straight stitches radiating from a French-knot center.
Order of stitching
Hoop-finishing notes
- Press from the back over a folded towel so cloud knots and fur texture stay raised.
- Trim traveling threads behind white clouds and pale moon areas to prevent shadows.
- Back the hoop with felt for a nursery-ready finish.
- Keep the fabric gently taut, not drum-tight, after heavy moon stitching.
Beginner-friendly practical tips
- Stitch the moon in sections: divide the crescent mentally into three curved zones so long stitches do not become loose or snag-prone.
- Use direction to create softness: bear fur looks best when the stitches radiate from the center of the face and curve around the cheeks.
- Keep lettering simple: one strand, short back stitches, and gentle tension will make “Sweet Dreams” more readable than thick thread.
- Build clouds gradually: start with a few white knots, then add more only where the cloud needs fullness. Leave tiny gaps for natural puffiness.
- Save sparkles for last: final dots and stars sit visually on top of the design and make the hoop feel finished.
