Petals
Work each petal from base to tip with long-and-short stitch so the thread direction follows the petal’s natural ray. Keep most petals at 2 strands; switch to 1 strand for narrow points and inner crease lines.

- Main body: DMC 742 and 743, alternating lengths to avoid hard stripes.
- Tip highlights: DMC 307, placed only on the upper third or outer edge.
Seed center
Use French knots, colonial knots, or tiny seed stitches in concentric rings. Mix DMC 975 and 938, then add scattered DMC 742/746 dots for pollen-like lift.
Leaves and stems
Outline the main leaf veins with split stitch, then fill with fishbone stitch or angled satin. Use DMC 3345 for the underside and DMC 472 along one edge for light.
Thread-count guidance
- Petal fill: 2 strands for clean coverage; 1 strand for fine blending at tips.
- Center knots: 2 strands for raised texture; wrap French knots once or twice, not too bulky.
- Outlines: 1–2 strands of DMC 975 or 3345 depending on how graphic the design should feel.
- Leaf veins: 1 strand for delicate veins; 2 strands for the central rib.
- Background accents: 1 strand only, so they do not compete with the sunflower.
Blending, shading & texture plan
Petal ombré
Blend from DMC 741 at the base into 743, then 742, finishing with DMC 307. For a softer transition, thread one strand of 742 with one strand of 743 in the middle zone.
Center depth
Keep the seed head darkest at the lower-left or inner ring with DMC 938. Use DMC 975 as the main brown and dot in DMC 742 to suggest pollen.
Leaf realism
Use angled stitch direction on each side of the central vein. Blend DMC 469 with 3345 near the base and 469 with 472 toward highlighted edges.
Outlined clarity
Back stitch or split stitch around selected outer petals with one strand of DMC 975. Do not outline every highlight line; leave some edges soft for a hand-painted feel.
Suggested stitching order
Practical hoop tips
- Choose a medium-weight cotton or linen in ivory, oatmeal, or pale warm beige to flatter the yellows.
- Keep fabric drum-tight; satin petals look uneven if the hoop loosens.
- Use shorter working lengths for yellow floss because pale colors show fuzz more easily.
- Park darker browns away from light petals to avoid dragging lint into yellow areas.
Optional embellishments
- Add a few tiny straight stitches in metallic gold near the center for a celebratory glow.
- Use turkey work very sparingly in the center if you want a plush, tactile seed head.
- For a rustic finish, mount in a wooden hoop and wrap the outer hoop with tan cotton tape.
- For a modern finish, keep the background blank and let the sunflower remain the full focal point.
