Stitch Map by Design Element

Squirrel face and body

Use 1-strand long-and-short stitch so the fur stays delicate. Start with 738 and 739 on the muzzle and belly, then feather 921 and 922 outward. Add 919 only where the head turns under the ear, arm, and back.

Large fluffy tail

Work the tail in curved, broken rows following the tail arc. Alternate 919, 921, 922, and 738 as separate fur strokes rather than solid bands. Let a few pale stitches cross darker ones for the wispy edge.

Open red book

Satin stitch the two cover halves with 2 strands of 816, then place 321 along the upper and center folds. Use 3865 for pages and 762 for the narrow page-shadow lines.

Stacked books

Use padded satin for the cyan, pink, yellow, teal, and purple covers. Keep the page sections flatter with 1-strand straight stitches so the books look stacked rather than bulky.

Wreath and leaves

Stem stitch the curved branch in 898 or 783. Add leaves in fishbone stitch with 469 near the stem and 3052 at the tips. Vary leaf lengths to echo the loose, hand-stitched wreath in the artwork.

Hearts, dots, and facial details

Make tiny hearts with two lazy-daisy stitches or compact satin stitches in 3722. Gold dots are French knots in 783. Save the eye, nose, mouth, and whiskers for last using one strand for control.

Suggested Stitching Order

Prepare the dark fabric

Use a water-soluble stabilizer, white transfer paper, or fine chalk pencil. Keep the hoop tight before beginning; satin-stitched books and dense tail texture can distort loose fabric.

Stitch the squirrel’s light areas

Begin with the belly, muzzle, and page-facing cheek in 739 and 738. This anchors the expression and prevents the darker copper stitches from crowding the face.

Add copper fur and tail layers

Build the squirrel coat with 921 and 922, then deepen with 919 and 898. On the tail, use many broken strokes and leave tiny gaps so the tail feels fluffy instead of filled like satin.

Complete the books

Fill the red book with smooth satin stitch, then work the stacked books from top to bottom. Add page lines after the covers so they sit cleanly along the edges.

Finish with wreath and sparkle details

Stem stitch the vine, add fishbone leaves, then place hearts and French knots. Finish with whiskers, eye glint, and the smallest dark outlines for a crisp woodland character.

Beginner-Friendly Practical Tips

Let the fur lines breathe

Use uneven stitch lengths in the squirrel and tail. Perfectly parallel stitches can make the animal look flat, while varied stitches create a soft natural pelt.

Control the tail silhouette

Sketch the main tail direction first and stitch from the outer curve inward. Place a few 739 and 738 stitches over copper rows at the edge to imitate fluffy stray hairs.

Make the book stack tidy

For crisp horizontal books, outline each cover with split stitch before filling. This gives satin stitches a clean stopping point and prevents uneven book corners.

Use dark outlines sparingly

On dark fabric, heavy black lines can overpower the small face. Use 898 for most definition and reserve 310 for the pupil, nose point, and the deepest creases.

Best needle: size 7–9 embroidery Fabric: dark cotton, linen, or cotton-linen blend Hoop: 6–7 inch display hoop Finish: steam from the back; protect French knots with a towel
