Likely DMC Color Palette

Colors are estimated from the visible hoop preview and matched to close DMC six-strand cotton shades. The design reads best when the sky is soft and blended, the water is broken into horizontal strokes, and the palm silhouettes stay crisp and dark.

310
DMC 310Black

Palm fronds, deepest trunk edges, and the strongest silhouette accents. Use sparingly but decisively so the palms frame the sunset.

3371
DMC 3371Black Brown

Coconut clusters and shaded palm trunks where pure black would look too flat.

801
DMC 801Coffee Brown Dark

Main trunk texture, darker beach marks, and warm shadow lines in the foreground sand.

975
DMC 975Golden Brown Dark

Sandy foreground ridges, trunk highlights, and warm broken stitches near the shoreline.

741
DMC 741Tangerine Medium

Deep orange sunset bands along the horizon and bright reflected streaks on the ocean.

742
DMC 742Tangerine Light

Orange-gold transition areas above the horizon and lively highlights in the water reflection.

725
DMC 725Topaz Medium Light

Golden sky glow, thin cloud strokes, and the brightest warm glints on the ripples.

744
DMC 744Yellow Pale

Soft halo around the sun and gentle upper-sky warmth; blend with cream for a less stripy finish.

3865
DMC 3865Winter White

Sun disk, central reflected path, foam sparkle, and tiny highlight stitches on wave crests.

964
DMC 964Sea Green Light

Pale turquoise surf line at the beach and cool light in the upper cloud/water transitions.

927
DMC 927Gray Green Light

Muted upper clouds, distant water, and soft atmospheric blending above the sunset.

924
DMC 924Gray Green Very Dark

Main ocean shadow, distant horizon line, and darker horizontal ripple marks.

Coverage estimate: warm sky and reflection about 40%, ocean greys 25%, palms and trunks 18%, sand 10%, sun/foam/highlights 7%.

Stitching Suggestions

Work the composition from background to foreground: sky first, ocean second, beach third, then the palms and tiny highlights. This keeps the silhouettes clean and prevents dark thread fuzz from catching in pale stitches.

ElementBest stitch choicesPractical notes
Sunset skyLong and short stitch, split stitch rowsUse horizontal direction changes rather than solid blocks. Blend 744 into 725, then 742 and 741 near the horizon for a glowing gradient.
Sun diskSatin stitch or very smooth long and short stitchStitch the sun after the sky but before water highlights. Keep edges clean with one strand of 3865 or 744 as a tiny split-stitch outline.
Ocean baseHorizontal long and short stitchUse 924 and 927 in staggered broken rows. Leave small gaps for warm reflection stitches instead of covering the water too densely.
Sun reflectionStraight stitch, couching, small satin dashesMake the reflection widest at the bottom and narrower near the sun. Alternate 3865, 725, 742, and a few 741 strokes.
Foam and surf lineStem stitch, whipped backstitch, couchingUse 964 with a touch of 3865. A slightly raised whipped line gives the wave edge a soft, foamy texture.
Sand foregroundSeed stitch, straight stitch, split stitchLayer 975 and 801 in short uneven marks. Keep the texture flatter than the palms so it does not compete with the silhouettes.
Palm trunksStem stitch, split stitch, long and short stitchLay a dark edge in 310 or 3371, then add narrow angled highlights with 801 and 975 to suggest bark ridges.
Palm frondsStraight stitch, fishbone stitch, detached straight stitchesUse 310 for the dark leaves. Stitch each frond from center rib outward so the leaflets taper naturally.
CoconutsPadded satin, French knots, tiny seed stitchUse 3371 and 801. A few raised knots make the coconut clusters stand out against the black fronds.

Thread Count, Blending & Shading

Sky and water

Use 2 strands for most filled areas. For smoother blending, combine 1 strand of 725 with 1 strand of 744 in the upper glow, then 1 strand of 742 with 1 strand of 725 through the mid-sunset.

Fine ripples

Use 1 strand for the thinnest ocean dashes, especially dark grey-green ripple marks and bright reflection lines. Vary stitch length so the sea looks natural rather than striped.

Silhouettes

Use 2 strands of 310 for bold fronds and trunk edges. For needle-painted realism, stitch the trunk base with 3371 first, then add short 801/975 highlights over it.

Foam texture

Use 3 strands only for the pale aqua surf line if you want a raised rope-like edge. Otherwise keep to 2 strands and whip the line with 3865 for brightness.

Outlining

Outline the horizon with 1 strand of 924 so it stays distant. Outline the sun softly with 1 strand of 744, not black, to preserve the glow.

Color depth

Place darker ocean stitches under the orange reflection. This contrast makes the sunset shimmer without needing metallic thread.

Recommended Stitching Order

  1. Transfer the design lightly and mark the horizon, sun circle, central reflection path, surf curve, palm trunks, and major frond directions.
  2. Fill the upper sky with pale 927/964 cloud tones, then layer the yellow and orange sunset bands horizontally.
  3. Stitch the sun disk and its warm halo, keeping the circle edge smooth and bright.
  4. Fill the ocean with broken grey-green horizontal strokes, leaving room for orange and cream reflection dashes.
  5. Add the central reflection from the sun downward, using shorter stitches near the horizon and wider broken lines near the beach.
  6. Work the sandy foreground with uneven brown stitches, then add the pale aqua surf line over the top.
  7. Finish with palm trunks, coconut clusters, and black fronds so the silhouettes sit cleanly in front of the sunset.

Beginner-Friendly Practical Tips

Keep the sunset luminous: do not overpack the stitches. The charm of this design comes from visible horizontal thread movement: warm, loose sky bands; broken ocean ripples; and crisp dark palms in the foreground.

Use a hoop stand if possible

Long horizontal stitches stay more even when both hands are free and the fabric remains drum-tight.

Shorten dark threads

Black thread can fuzz quickly. Use shorter lengths for palm fronds and re-thread often for sharp edges.

Test blends first

Try 1 strand 742 + 1 strand 725, and 1 strand 927 + 1 strand 924 on scrap fabric before filling the sky and water.

Protect the sun

Stitch around the sun carefully and avoid dragging orange thread across the back where it may shadow through pale stitches.

Vary ripple spacing

Leave slightly larger spaces near the horizon and denser stitches near the foreground to create depth.

Save accents for last

Final bright dashes of 3865 and 725 on the water will revive the whole piece after the dark palms are finished.
