Four Seasons of Sports In
A practical embroidery guide for a circular four-quadrant sports design: spring greenery with a racket/paddle, summer or autumn orange field textures with footballs, and a frosty winter half with skis, snowboard, boots, snowballs, and pale blue stitched leaves.

Suggested DMC Palette
Use this palette to keep the four seasonal quarters distinct while still balanced around the pale fabric and circular hoop. The darkest blues and browns anchor the sports equipment; the greens, oranges, and icy aquas create the seasonal background texture.
Stitch Map by Section
Spring green quarter
Work fern fronds with fly stitch or fishbone stitch in 3011/3012. Add curled vines with stem stitch and single-strand lazy daisy leaves. The racket or paddle can be satin stitched in 964, then edged with 500 for a clean graphic shape.
Winter sports half
Fill skis with long satin stitches in 823, feather in 798 as a highlight, and use one strand of Blanc for narrow shine marks. Snow can be French knots in Blanc and 747, varied between one and two wraps for natural texture.
Orange field quarter
Use 947 as the dominant grass/needle color with 741 for lighter tips. Short straight stitches should radiate from the center to the rim, keeping the direction lively rather than perfectly parallel.
Sports equipment details
Football shapes look best with padded satin stitch in 801, white lacing in one strand, and a tiny dark 3799 backstitch at the ends. Boots need dense satin or split stitch in 3799 with 3846 or 747 along the sole for icy reflection.
Blending & Shading
Texture Suggestions
- French knots: Snowballs, tiny white flowers, and background dots. Vary wraps so the surface does not look mechanical.
- Fly stitch: Perfect for fern branches, orange grasses, and pale winter leaves because it creates a natural forked tip.
- Split stitch: Use for curved outlines around boards, balls, and boots when you need a smooth line.
- Satin stitch: Best for bold sports objects. Pad the footballs and boards lightly if you want a raised applique-like feel.
- Backstitch: Use sparingly for final definition; too much outlining can flatten the airy seasonal background.
Outlining Details
Outline the circle divisions with stitches that point outward from the center rather than a hard black line. For sports gear, outline with the darker shade of the object: 500 for green equipment, 823 for blue skis, 947/801 for warm footballs, and 3799 for boots.
Beginner Tips
Start with the large equipment shapes, then add leaves, grasses, and knots last. This prevents textured filler from catching while you satin stitch. Keep the hoop drum-tight and use shorter thread lengths when working French knots to reduce fuzzing.
Finishing Notes
After stitching, check that the center point feels balanced: add a few pale blue stitches on the winter side or small green curls on the spring side if one quadrant feels empty. Press face down on a towel so the knots and padded areas stay dimensional.
