DMC palette & stitch guide

Geometric Tribal

A crisp hoop design built from symmetrical diamonds, chevrons, arrow forms, striped side panels, bead-like dots, and a bold central eye. The palette is intentionally restrained: deep garnet red, black-charcoal structure, cool blue-gray accents, and warm natural linen.

Blending & Shading Ideas

  • Red dimension: combine one strand DMC 815 + one strand DMC 814 for darker lower chevrons; switch to 815 + 816 on upper chevrons.
  • Graphic black without harshness: use DMC 310 for the pupil and main bars, but 3799 for thin hatching so fine details do not look heavy.
  • Blue-gray accents: stitch the knots with 926, then add one tiny straight stitch of 927 to suggest a bead catching light.
  • Ivory fabric preservation: leave most pale areas unstitched. Use 3865 only if you need to sharpen the pale ring around the central eye.
Outlining tip: finish all red fills first, then outline. The final black and dark-pewter lines will hide small edge irregularities and make the motif look crisp.

Beginner-Friendly Stitching Order

Transfer and stabilize. Mark the vertical centerline, the central eye, and the main diamond first. Keep the hoop drum-tight so the geometric points do not distort.
Stitch the central eye. Fill the black pupil, then work the white/linen ring, red ring, and outer separators. Rotate the hoop as needed instead of twisting your wrist.
Build the red geometry. Stitch paired chevrons and triangles from top to bottom, checking that left and right shapes mirror each other.
Add black structure. Work the side bars, inner black diagonal bands, and tiny hatch marks with controlled backstitch or stem stitch.
Finish with dots and arrows. Add French knots last so they stay raised and clean. Steam lightly from the back after finishing.

Compact Shopping List

Core colors: DMC 815, 814, 816, 310, 3799, 926, 927, and 3865. Optional accents: 729 for a warm gold touch and 869 for a softer brown-black outline on natural linen.

Needle choice: size 7 embroidery needle for 2–3 strands, size 9 for single-strand hatching. A 5- or 6-inch hoop suits the motif scale and helps keep the side elements aligned.
