Humpback Fluke Sunset Splash

A dramatic ocean-hoop design with a dark humpback whale fluke rising from textured teal water, a coral-pink sunset band, a soft yellow sun, pale cloud dashes, and bright splash droplets. The stitching plan below keeps the whale bold, the sea lively, and the horizon warm without overwhelming the simple circular composition.

Design color read

The reference is built around strong contrast: a near-black whale outline, charcoal and silver-gray fluke shading, layered turquoise-to-deep-blue water, pale foam accents, and a narrow sunset stripe of peach, salmon, and warm gold. Keep the fabric background light cream so the horizon and splash stitches remain airy.

For the closest effect, stitch the sea in horizontal passes, the fluke in directional long-and-short shading, and the sunset in thin broken lines rather than solid blocks.

Thread-count snapshot

  • Outlines: 1-2 strands for the whale edge and horizon detail.
  • Fluke fill: 1 strand for smooth shading, 2 strands for a faster textured finish.
  • Water bands: 2-3 strands for satin/straight-stitch coverage.
  • Foam and droplets: 1 strand for small lines, 2 wraps for French knots.
  • Sunset lines: 1-2 strands, deliberately spaced so the fabric glows through.

Suggested DMC palette

DMC 310 - Black
Whale silhouette edges, underside separation, deepest inner fluke crease, and a few anchor stitches at the base of the tail.
DMC 3799 - Pewter Gray Very Dark
Main dark shading on the whale fluke; blend beside black to soften the outline while keeping the dramatic shape.
DMC 318 - Steel Gray Light
Mid-tone fluke strokes, especially along the upper wings and central ridges where the reference shows silvery texture.
DMC 415 - Pearl Gray
Fine highlight stitches on the fluke tips, ridges, and reflected edges; use sparingly so the whale stays moody.
DMC 3809 - Turquoise Very Dark
Deep teal water layer just below the horizon and in shadow pockets around the splash.
DMC 3846 - Turquoise Bright
Brighter surface ripples, mid-water bands, and short strokes that give the sea its clear blue-green movement.
DMC 924 - Gray Green Very Dark
Lower ocean shadows and the darker curved base of the water shape; alternate with 3809 for depth.
DMC 747 - Sky Blue Very Light
Foam arcs, splash lines, and cool highlights around the whale tail where water breaks upward.
DMC 3865 - Winter White
Tiny foam dots, distant pale cloud dashes, and final glints on the water. Avoid large white areas; keep it delicate.
DMC 744 - Yellow Pale
Sun disk and the warmest glints along the horizon. Pair with 3822 if you want a richer golden sunset.
DMC 3778 - Terra Cotta Light
Peach sunset streaks and soft reflected warmth above the waterline.
DMC 758 - Terra Cotta Very Light
Salmon-coral horizon bands and scattered sky lines; stitch in broken rows for a painterly effect.

Stitch map

Whale fluke - split stitch outline + long-and-short fill Outline the outer fluke with 310, then shade inward with 3799, 318, and tiny touches of 415. Follow the direction of each fluke wing so the stitches fan outward like natural ridges.
Central tail - stem stitch ridges Use 3799 and 318 in narrow vertical or slightly curved rows. Add one very fine 415 line down the center to suggest wet shine.
Ocean base - horizontal straight stitch Lay irregular rows of 3809, 3846, and 924. Vary stitch length from 5-18 mm to prevent a striped, mechanical look.
Splash ring - couching or back stitch Work curved foam arcs in 747, then add 3865 French knots for bubbles and spray tips.
Sunset - running stitch bands Use 3778, 758, and 744 in thin broken lines. Leave fabric gaps to mimic the reference's airy sunset glow.

Texture & shading guidance

Make the whale feel dimensional

Start with the black outline, then tuck dark gray stitches under it. Place the lightest gray only on the upper inner fluke and a few raised ridges. This gives the tail a rounded, wet surface without needing many colors.

Keep the ocean lively

Use horizontal stitches but slightly stagger each row. Add occasional pale-blue foam lines over the darker teal after the base is complete, especially near the splash and lower curved edge.

Balance warm and cool

The sunset is a small accent. Keep coral and peach bands narrow so the turquoise water and charcoal whale remain the focal point.

Blending idea: For the fluke, thread one strand of 3799 with one strand of 318 for a smoky mid-tone. For water, blend one strand of 3809 with one strand of 3846 where the surface meets the sunset.

Beginner-friendly stitching order

Transfer only essential lines. Mark the fluke outline, tail center, horizon, sun, water edge, and main splash oval. Too many water lines can make the hoop feel crowded.
Stitch the sunset first. Work the sun and warm horizon bands before the water so the teal rows can overlap the lower edge neatly.
Fill the ocean from back to front. Place the darkest lower bands first, then brighter mid-water strokes and foam highlights last.
Outline and shade the whale. A clean black edge makes the fluke readable; fill with directional gray strokes after the outline is secure.
Add splash details last. French knots, small straight stitches, and pale couching are fragile-looking details that should sit on top of the ocean texture.

Practical tips

  • Use a sharp embroidery needle for the dense whale fill; switch to a slightly larger eye when working 3-strand ocean rows.
  • Keep thread lengths around 35-45 cm to reduce fuzzing in the dark grays and teals.
  • For a clean circular water edge, lightly pencil the curve and end each row on that line rather than trimming with outline stitches.
  • Let some sky stitches be single, floating dashes. Overfilling the sky will reduce the calm sunset feel.
  • Press from the back on a towel after stitching so the knots and textured water are not flattened.

Optional substitutions

Softer vintage look: Replace 3846 with DMC 3810 and use more 3865 in the foam. Stormier look: Add DMC 939 Navy Blue Very Dark to the lowest water and underside of the tail. Warmer sunset: Add DMC 3822 Straw Light beside 744 and extend a few peach reflection lines into the top water band.
