Fresh Citrus Harvest

A bright tropical hoop with leaning palm trunks, layered fronds, a glowing sun, sculpted clouds, sea-to-lagoon water, sandy shore, and small citrus/coconut accents. The palette balances juicy yellow light, teal water, creamy beach neutrals, and deep leafy greens.

Suggested DMC Floss Palette

Choose a compact palette that still gives the design depth: dark greens for palm shadows, olive-golds for sunlit fronds, teal families for water, warm creams for sand, and crisp whites for cloud texture.

DMC 934 — Black Avocado Green

Deepest palm-frond shadow and the darkest underside strokes. Use sparingly in 1–2 strands to keep leaves crisp rather than heavy.

DMC 895 — Very Dark Hunter Green

Main dark foliage color for palm needles and base grasses; excellent for split-stitch veins and darker fly-stitch leaf tips.

DMC 730 — Very Dark Olive Green

Mid-tone leaf body and grass clumps. Blend with 3012 for softer, sun-facing fronds.

DMC 3012 — Medium Khaki Green

Light palm highlights, new shoots, and beach grass. Works well as the top strand in a two-color long-and-short blend.

DMC 801 — Dark Coffee Brown

Strong palm trunk ridges and dark coconut/citrus outlines. Use in wrapped back stitch for raised bark texture.

DMC 975 — Golden Brown

Warm trunk highlights and small fruit centers. Blend with 801 where the trunks curve toward the light.

DMC 743 — Medium Yellow

Sun core and citrus glow. Stitch in a spiral or tight satin fill so it reads round and radiant.

DMC 744 — Pale Yellow

Sun rays and the outer halo. Use 1 strand for delicate rays so they stay airy against the background.

DMC 3809 — Very Dark Turquoise

Far horizon line and darkest water bands. Keep stitches horizontal to visually flatten the sea.

DMC 3847 — Dark Teal Green

Middle water tone and wave-shadow rows. Alternate strand direction slightly for a rippled surface.

DMC 3846 — Bright Turquoise

Lagoon highlights near the shore and vivid water sparkle. Scatter short straight stitches over darker teal.

DMC 3844 — Bright Turquoise

Pale foam glints and shallow-water shimmer. Best in 1 strand so the highlights remain light and broken.

DMC 822 — Beige Gray Light

Soft sand foundation and cloud shadow. Mix with 3865 for natural beach texture.

DMC 422 — Light Hazelnut Brown

Sand contour lines, shell-like ridges, and warm edge shading on the island.

DMC B5200 — Snow White

Bright foam caps, cloud knots, and final sparkle accents. Pair with 3865 for softer, less stark whites.

DMC 3865 — Winter White

Main cloud and foam white; warmer than B5200 and more natural for dense textured stitches.

Stitch Map by Design Area

Palm fronds

  • Use fishbone stitch or long-and-short stitch from center vein outward.
  • Work veins in 895 or 934, then fill alternating frond segments with 730 and 3012.
  • Use 1 strand at fine tips and 2 strands nearer the center for tapered leaves.

Palm trunks

  • Start with stem stitch or split stitch down the curve in 975.
  • Add short diagonal wrapped stitches in 801 to suggest ringed bark.
  • Place highlights on the sun-facing edge with 1 strand of 422 or 975.

Ocean and lagoon

  • Use horizontal rows of satin, split, or long straight stitches; keep the horizon neat and flat.
  • Layer 3809 at the back, 3847 through the middle, then 3846 and 3844 toward the shore.
  • Add foam with tiny detached chain, seed stitch, and short B5200 dashes.

Sand and shoreline

  • Fill with loose split stitch in 822, following the curve of the island.
  • Add irregular 422 contour lines and a few B5200 highlights for shell-like sparkle.
  • French knots in 822/B5200 create bead-like sand texture at the front edge.

Sun and rays

  • Work the sun as a spiral stem stitch or tight circular satin fill using 743 and 744.
  • Use 1 strand of 744 for long rays; couch them if they need to stay perfectly straight.
  • Add a tiny 743 center knot for a warm focal point.

Clouds and sky marks

  • Use 3865 for the base with B5200 on raised top loops.
  • French knots, colonial knots, and loose detached chain stitches give soft puffiness.
  • Keep distant sky dashes in 1 strand so they remain subtle and airy.

Thread Counts, Blending & Texture

AreaRecommended strandsPractical guidance
Fine outlines1 strandUse 934, 895, or 3809 for crisp edges on leaves, horizon, and trunk details without creating a cartoon outline.
Main fills2 strandsBest for fronds, water bands, trunks, and sand. Two strands give coverage while still letting directional stitches show.
Raised clouds3 strands or knotsUse 3865/B5200 for French knots and detached chain clusters; avoid overfilling so the cloud keeps a soft, broken edge.
Water sparkle1 strandScatter short stitches of 3844 and B5200 on top after the teal base is complete. Leave gaps for a realistic shimmer.
Blended needle1 + 1 strandsFor leaf transitions, combine one strand 730 with one strand 3012; for water, combine 3847 with 3846 in transition rows.

Beginner-Friendly Stitching Sequence

Transfer the main shapes lightly

Mark the horizon, shore curve, trunks, palm centers, sun circle, cloud masses, and a few wave rows. Avoid drawing every tiny water dash; those look better improvised.

Stitch the background water first

Build horizontal teal rows from dark at the horizon to bright turquoise near the beach. Leave room for foam stitches and do not worry if the rows are slightly uneven.

Add sand and trunks

Fill the island with curved, loose stitches, then work the palm trunks over it so the trees feel planted. Use darker bark bands only after the base trunk is complete.

Layer foliage from back to front

Stitch darker fronds first, then mid greens, then final 3012 highlights. Keep every stitch angled outward from the frond vein.

Finish with bright details

Add sun rays, cloud knots, foam speckles, citrus/coconut accents, and tiny sparkle stitches at the end so they sit cleanly on top.

Finishing Notes

For a polished hoop, keep the ocean edge straight and the shoreline softly irregular. The design’s charm comes from contrast: smooth horizontal water, curved bark ridges, feathery palm leaves, fluffy raised clouds, and small bright citrus-yellow accents. Trim jump threads as you go, rinse only if your transfer method allows it, and press face-down on a towel to protect knots and raised texture.
