Hot Air Balloon Over a Sunflower Field
A bright hoop design with a saturated turquoise sky, fluffy dimensional clouds, a jewel-toned hot air balloon, and a dense foreground of golden sunflowers. The strongest effect comes from clean directional fill stitches in the sky and balloon, raised white texture for clouds, and layered greens and yellows in the sunflower field.
Design color read
The reference is built around three color families: cool aqua blues for the open sky, warm sunflower yellows and honey-golds for the field, and small high-contrast accents on the balloon in coral pink, violet, orange, and dark navy. The clouds are intentionally raised and snowy white, while the field uses darker greens beneath the flowers to keep the yellow heads lively and readable.

Stitch map by design area
| Area | Recommended stitches | Thread count & handling | Practical notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sky background | Long-and-short stitch, horizontal satin runs, scattered straight stitches | 2 strands for coverage; 1 strand for distant wisps | Work from upper sky to horizon. Change blue every few rows so the sky softens toward the field. |
| Clouds | French knots, colonial knots, tiny seed stitches | 2 strands for knots; wrap twice for small knots, three times for puffier edges | Cluster knots irregularly. Add DMC 762 only under the lower edge so the clouds stay bright but dimensional. |
| Hot air balloon | Satin stitch inside panels, stem stitch or split stitch ribs | 2 strands for panels; 1–2 strands for rib outlines | Follow the curved panel direction from top cap to basket. Outline after filling to clean the edges. |
| Basket & rigging | Back stitch, tiny satin blocks, couching for cords | 1 strand navy for rigging; 2 strands brown for basket | Use the darkest thread sparingly. A few clean lines are better than heavy black outlining. |
| Sunflower heads | Lazy daisy petals, straight stitches, French knot centers | 2 strands for petals; 2 strands brown for centers | Use DMC 444 on outer tips and DMC 972/740 closer to the center for natural golden depth. |
| Leaves & field | Fishbone stitch, detached chain leaves, short straight grass stitches | 2 strands for leaves; 1 strand for fine grass texture | Place darker green first as the field base, then add brighter leaf strokes on top to avoid a flat green mass. |
| Birds & highlights | Fly stitch, small V stitches, single straight stitches | 1 strand white or off-white | Keep birds tiny and simple. Uneven spacing makes them feel natural against the sky. |
Blending & shading guidance
- Sky: blend DMC 3846 into 3843, then into 3841 as you approach the horizon. Use broken horizontal stitches rather than one solid block.
- Balloon: place darker rib lines in DMC 3837 or 939 after the color panels are complete. This sharpens the balloon without crowding the design.
- Sunflowers: stitch yellow petals first, then add a few orange base stitches before knotting the brown centers. This creates a rounder flower head.
- Field depth: keep larger flowers and bolder leaves near the lower edge. Use smaller stitches and fewer details as the field recedes toward the horizon.
Outlining details
- Use split stitch for the balloon edge because it bends smoothly around the oval shape.
- Back stitch the basket with DMC 780, then add one or two DMC 938 shadow lines at the base.
- Outline only the largest sunflower centers; leave many tiny background blooms as dots so the field does not become busy.
- Add a fine white running stitch at the horizon to separate the blue sky from the yellow-green field.
Thread-count plan
Fine details
Use for birds, balloon rigging, tiny horizon marks, distant flower dots, and final highlight lines. This keeps the upper half light and clean.
Main stitching
Use for most satin, stem, split, lazy daisy, fishbone, and long-and-short stitches. This is the best all-purpose count for a 6–8 inch hoop.
Raised texture
Use selectively for bold sunflower knots or extra-puffy cloud clusters. Avoid using 3 strands everywhere, or the sky will feel bulky.
Texture suggestions
- Vary French knot sizes in the clouds by changing wrap count, not by pulling tighter.
- Angle sunflower petals around each center like small sun rays; irregular lengths look more natural.
- Layer leaf stitches over the field base to create the dense, lush lower arc shown in the reference.
- Use short sky dashes around the balloon to suggest breeze and movement.
Beginner-friendly workflow
- Transfer only the main shapes first: hoop circle, horizon, balloon, large clouds, and large sunflowers.
- Stitch the sky before raised clouds so the knots do not catch your thread.
- Complete the balloon panels before the ribs, then add the basket and rigging last.
- Finish with clouds, bird shapes, and tiny field flowers so texture sits cleanly on top.
Finishing tips
Press the finished piece face down on a thick towel so the cloud knots and sunflower centers are not flattened. Trim thread tails closely on the back near the balloon and sky, where show-through is more noticeable. For display, a pale wood hoop complements the warm sunflower field and keeps the turquoise sky feeling bright.
