Majestic Bear in Sunflower and Wildflower Wreath
A warm woodland portrait built around a richly shaded bear, golden sunflowers, deep green leaves, red daisies, white chamomile-style blossoms, purple berry clusters, and a natural linen ground. The palette below keeps the bear realistic while giving the wreath clear, cheerful contrast.
Suggested DMC Color Palette
Use the browns in layered direction stitches for fur, the yellows for sunflower petals, strong greens for wreath foliage, and a few clean accent colors for berries and small wildflowers.

DMC 898
Very Dark Coffee Brown
Bear outline, ear interiors, chest shadows, and dark directional fur strokes.

Main warm brown fur, muzzle transitions, and sunflower center rings.

Stitch Map by Design Area
Bear portraitRealistic fur
- Long and short stitch: Work in the natural fur direction: outward from the forehead center, down the cheeks, around the muzzle, and vertically through the chest.
- Split stitch underlayer: Place a loose dark brown map first, then add lighter broken strokes on top to avoid a flat filled shape.
- Nose and eyes: Use satin stitch with one strand of 3371 or black-brown, then add a tiny white straight-stitch glint.
- Muzzle softness: Blend 739, 436, and 975 in short, uneven stitches; keep the center lighter and the sides warmer.
Floral wreathDimensional petals
- Sunflowers: Fill each petal with satin or fishbone stitch from base to tip; alternate 742 and 972 so the petals sparkle.
- Flower centers: Build texture with French knots, colonial knots, or tight seed stitch in 3371, 898, and 801.
- Daisies: Use detached chain or narrow satin stitches for white petals, with 762 at the petal bases for gentle shade.
- Berries: Work clustered French knots in 550 and 209; place the lighter knots on the upper-left side of the cluster.
Thread Count, Blending & Shading
| Area | Strands | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Bear fur | 1–2 strands | Use 1 strand for fine facial fur and 2 strands for the chest and outer body. Mix two browns in the needle only where a soft transition is needed. |
| Sunflower petals | 2 strands | Use 2 strands for smooth petal coverage. Add a single-strand darker line at the base or center vein for definition. |
| Leaves and stems | 2–3 strands | Use 2 strands for leaf fill and 1 strand for veins. Stem stitch works best for curved wreath stems. |
| Small berries and centers | 2 strands | French knots are neat with 2 wraps and 2 strands. Use 3 strands only for larger sunflower centers. |
| Outlines | 1 strand | Keep outlining thin: split stitch or backstitch in a matching darker shade, not harsh black except for the nose and pupils. |
Blending idea: for the bear, try 898 + 801 for deep middle fur, 801 + 975 for warm body fur, and 975 + 436 for golden face highlights. Use these blends sparingly so the portrait remains textured, not striped.
Practical Stitching Order
- Transfer the design lightly onto natural linen or cotton. Mark the bear’s eye line, muzzle shape, and the circular wreath path with extra care.
- Stitch the deepest bear shadows first in 3371 and 898. This anchors the portrait and helps you place mid-tones confidently.
- Add mid-tone and light fur in broken layers. Let some dark stitches remain visible between lighter strands for a realistic shaggy coat.
- Work large leaves next, then sunflowers, then smaller flowers and berries. This layering keeps foliage tucked behind the blossoms.
- Finish with fine outlines, leaf veins, petal base shadows, knots for centers, and tiny highlights in the eyes and on the nose.
Beginner-Friendly Tips
- Do not try to fill the bear with perfectly parallel stitches. Uneven lengths create the natural fur effect.
- Keep the eyes symmetrical before adding the surrounding fur; the expression depends on them.
- For neat sunflowers, stitch every petal from the outside tip toward the center or consistently from center to tip.
- If the wreath becomes crowded, reduce some berries to single French knots instead of full clusters.
- Use a hoop or frame with firm tension; loose fabric makes long-and-short fur harder to control.
- Park unused colors on a thread card labeled by area: fur, greens, yellows, reds, purples, whites.
- Step back often. The bear’s shading should read correctly from a distance even if individual stitches look lively up close.
- Press finished work face down on a towel so knots and raised centers stay dimensional.
