Personalized Initial 'F' Floral Embroidery Hoop Art

Design read

The reference design centers on a large stitched letter F in rich wine red. Floral clusters sit along the left side and top shoulder: layered red roses, a pink rosette, a small daisy-like bloom, taupe leaves, dark plum foliage, black berry clusters, burgundy sprigs, and scattered seed-stitch dots.

The soft linen ground and wooden hoop keep the piece refined, while the oversized bow adds plush texture and depth. Stitch the monogram first so the flowers can overlap naturally and feel arranged around the letter rather than floating separately.

Suggested DMC floss palette

Use a wine-and-blush palette with muted neutrals for the leaves. The strongest colors belong in the letter, bow, rose centers, and berries; the lighter shades soften petals and keep the floral cluster elegant.

DMC 814 - Dark Garnet

Main monogram shadow, deepest rose spirals, and low folds of the bow.

DMC 815 - Medium Garnet

Core letter fill, red rose petals, and burgundy sprig leaves.

DMC 816 - Garnet

Letter highlights, petal turns, and warm transitions inside roses.

DMC 3721 - Shell Pink Dark

Dusty red flower edges and blended highlight strands in red blooms.

DMC 3688 - Mauve Medium

Pink rosette base, soft rose petal highlights, and scattered pink dots.

DMC 3687 - Mauve

Lightest pink petal tips and gentle top highlights on the rosette.

DMC 3820 - Straw Dark

Small daisy center, a few golden pollen dots, and warm botanical accents.

DMC 3371 - Black Brown

Nearly black berry cluster, deepest leaf veins, and bow crease shadows.

DMC 154 - Very Dark Grape

Dark plum leaves and cool shadow threads where florals meet the letter.

DMC 840 - Beige Brown Medium

Muted leaf shading, twig stems, and neutral botanical shadows.

DMC 841 - Beige Brown Light

Taupe leaves, soft highlights on dry foliage, and leaf-tip blending.

DMC 3866 - Mocha Brown Ultra Very Light

Subtle fabric-colored highlights, small separators, and softened edges.

Stitch plan by design area

Monogram

Letter F

  • Fill the thick serif letter with long and short stitch using 2 strands: DMC 815 as the base, 814 in the left and lower shadows, and 816/3721 on raised ridges.
  • Keep stitches vertical through the stem, horizontal across the top bar, and angled around the inner curve so the letter looks dimensional.
  • Use a 1-strand split stitch outline in 814 before filling for clean edges and stable curves.
Roses

Woven and spiral blooms

  • Use woven wheel roses with 2 or 3 strands. Start centers with 814 or 815, then weave outward with 816, 3721, or 3688.
  • For the pale top rose, blend one strand 3688 with one strand 3687 on the outer ring.
  • Do not pull too tight; a slightly raised rose matches the plush look of the reference.
Leaves

Taupe and plum foliage

  • Use fishbone stitch for tan leaves: 841 on one side, 840 on the other, and a single 3866 highlight stitch near the tip.
  • For dark plum leaves, stitch in satin or fishbone with 154, then add a central vein in 3371.
  • Alternate leaf angles so the clusters look natural around the letter.
Bow

Satin bow option

  • If embroidering the bow instead of adding ribbon, use padded satin stitch or long and short stitch in 814, 815, and 3371.
  • For a mixed-media finish, attach a real burgundy satin ribbon bow after all stitching is complete; tack it at the knot and under the loops with matching sewing thread.
  • Add only minimal embroidery under the ribbon so the fabric does not become bulky.

Thread-count and blending guidance

AreaRecommended strandsPractical use notes
Letter outline1 strandSplit stitch or stem stitch in 814. Keep the line narrow so the serif details stay crisp.
Letter fill2 strandsLong and short stitch gives soft shading. Add occasional 1-strand highlight lines after the fill is finished.
Large roses2 to 3 strandsUse 3 strands for fuller woven wheels, or 2 strands for smaller hoops and tighter spacing.
Small daisy petals2 strandsDetached chain or lazy daisy stitches in 816/3721, with a French knot center in 3820.
Leaves and stems1 to 2 strandsUse 2 strands for leaf bodies and 1 strand for stems, veins, and twig lines.
Berries and dots1 to 2 strandsFrench knots or colonial knots. Wrap twice for small dots, three times for round berry texture.

Shading and texture suggestions

Monogram depth

Place darkest garnet on the left side of the vertical stem, under the top bar, and inside the lower serif. Let DMC 815 dominate the center, then add narrow 816 highlights where light would catch raised stitches.

Rose dimension

Keep centers dark and outer petals lighter. On woven wheels, change colors halfway through a round rather than creating perfect rings; this makes petals look more organic.

Leaf contrast

The tan leaves soften the burgundy. Work a few leaves only in 841 and 840, then reserve 154 for the darkest leafy silhouettes so the arrangement does not become too heavy.

Beginner-friendly stitching order

Transfer lightly

Use a fine water-soluble pen or lightbox transfer. Mark the outside of the F, main rose circles, leaf center lines, and bow placement. Avoid heavy marks under pale pink areas.

Stabilize the letter

Outline the F with 1-strand split stitch. This creates a rail for the long and short fill and prevents fuzzy edges on the serifs.

Fill and shade the F

Work from the outside edges inward. Vary stitch length so rows do not form stripes. Add final darker streaks only after the base fill is smooth.

Add florals from back to front

Stitch stems and leaves first, then the daisy petals, then the raised roses. This layering lets roses sit on top of foliage like the reference image.

Finish with accents

Add French-knot berries, tiny pollen dots, and the ribbon bow last. Steam gently from the back, never pressing directly on woven roses or knots.

Practical tips for a polished hoop

  • Use a sharp embroidery needle for the dense monogram fill; switch to a slightly larger needle for woven roses so threads pass smoothly.
  • Shorten floss lengths to about 14 to 16 inches when using dark burgundy shades. Dark reds can fuzz if dragged through fabric too often.
  • For smoother shading, blend one strand DMC 815 with one strand DMC 816 in transition areas of the F and red roses.
  • Keep black-brown knots small and deliberate. Too many dark knots can overpower the soft personalized floral look.
  • If adding real ribbon, complete all washable transfer removal first, let the piece dry fully, then tack the ribbon in place.
