Autumn Lake Reflections - DMC Palette & Stitching Tips

DMC palette & stitching guide

Autumn Lake Reflections

A calm lakeside landscape with glowing autumn trees, white birch trunks, dark reflected banks, a small wooden dock, and cool blue water in the foreground. The palette balances copper, gold, pine green, bark brown, misty grey-blue, and bright water highlights.

Image color reading

Autumn Lake Reflections Embroidery
Warm treeline: ochre yellow, old gold, copper, rust red, and cranberry-orange trees frame the lake on both sides.
Cool water: pale blue, teal-blue, slate grey, and white horizontal stitches create the reflective lake surface.
Strong accents: dark brown dock posts, branch lines, bank shadows, and black-brown reflections add structure and contrast.

This design works best when the land and water are treated differently: use dense, raised stitches for the autumn trees, then use flatter horizontal stitches for the lake so the reflections feel calm, glossy, and receding.

Sky and cloudsLong-and-short stitch, light running stitch, tiny straight dashes1 strandKeep the sky airy and sparse. Use 3865, 762, 927, and 926 in short broken marks so the clouds stay soft rather than striped.
Distant shorelineVertical straight stitches, seed stitch, soft back stitch1 strandUse muted greens and grey-greens. Keep the stitches small and low contrast so the shoreline sits behind the bright side trees.

Blending and shading ideas

Water blend
3844 at the bottom, 597 through the center, 828 and 3865 for highlights.
Golden trees
783 as the base, 3855 on the light side, and 920 tucked underneath for autumn warmth.
Red-orange trees
919 for deepest clusters, 920 for midtones, and 921 for tiny bright sparks.
Wood and banks
938 and 898 for shadows, 433 for plank body, and 434 for sunlit wood grain.

Reflection guidance

  • Keep lake stitches mostly horizontal. Even when reflecting vertical trees, break the color into short side-to-side strokes.
  • Use the same foliage colors in the water, but dull them by spacing stitches apart and mixing in 926 or 3844.
  • Place 3865 highlight lines on top of finished water stitches to make the lake surface feel glossy.

Outlining details

  • Use one strand of 898 for tree branches and dock board divisions. Save 938 for the darkest post edges and underside shadows.
  • For birch trunks, outline only one side with broken 762 or 938 stitches. A full outline can make the trees look too cartoon-like.
  • The far shoreline should be lightly indicated, not heavily outlined, so the lake still feels spacious.

Texture suggestions

  • Mix French knots with seed stitches in the treetops: knots give leaf density, while seed stitches fill gaps without adding too much bulk.
  • Use straight stitches that follow the dock perspective so the boards appear to recede into the scene.
  • Add a few loose grass tufts with 3011 and 3012 at the banks to soften the transition between land and water.

Beginner-friendly stitching order

1. Start with pale areas
Place sky, clouds, distant shoreline, and the light center of the lake first. These are easiest before raised foliage is added.
2. Add structure
Stitch the dock, trunks, birches, and shoreline edges. This gives the landscape its perspective and prevents the trees from floating.
3. Finish with texture
Layer foliage knots, reflection dashes, grass tufts, and floating leaves last so the surface looks lively and dimensional.
Use a 6-inch hoop Needle size 7-9 embroidery Short horizontal water stitches Separate strands before blending Keep knots denser near the trees

Practical finish tip

After the main stitching is complete, add only a few final highlights: thin 3865 water glints, small 3855 leaf knots on the brightest trees, and tiny 434 dock grain lines. These last touches should sparkle, not cover the earlier shading.
