Autumn Mountain Landscape

A polished embroidery planning page for a cozy mountain view: smoky distant peaks, golden-orange forest slopes, dark evergreens, still lake reflections, and warm foreground texture that feels like late autumn light.

Design read: This landscape needs both atmosphere and crisp detail. Keep the mountains soft and slightly greyed, make the tree line darker and more defined, then let rust, ochre, copper, and gold dominate the autumn banks and foreground. Lake stitches should sit flatter and more horizontal than the foliage stitches.

Suggested DMC Floss Palette

Use the full palette for depth, or reduce it to one sky tone, two mountain tones, three foliage tones, one evergreen, one lake blue-grey, and one dark outline shade for a simpler stitch.

Stitch Map

Design areaBest stitchesThread countHow to use them
Sky and glowLong and short stitch, very loose satin bands1–2 strandsBlend 3827 into 743 with feathered edges. Keep stitches smooth and slightly curved so the sky feels calm.
Distant mountainsLong and short stitch, split stitch contour lines1 strand for detail; 2 strands for fillUse 648 as the base and 646 for shaded planes. Do not over-outline distant peaks; soft edges create depth.
Evergreen lineStraight stitch, fly stitch, tiny fishbone stitch2 strandsWork short upward stitches in 3362, then add a few 730 stitches between trees to break up the silhouette.
Autumn forest banksSeed stitch, detached chain, French knots, short straight stitches2 strands; 1 strand for final dotsLayer 922, 921, and 783 irregularly. Avoid rows; clustered stitches look more like foliage.
Lake reflectionsBack stitch, running stitch, couching, horizontal satin stitches1 strandUse 926 as the base and 927 for narrow reflection lines. Stitch horizontally, leaving small fabric gaps for sparkle.
Shoreline and foregroundStem stitch, split stitch, scattered seed stitch2 strands for shore; 1 strand for textureDefine the shore with 898, then soften it with copper and topaz stitches crossing slightly over the line.

Blending Ideas

Atmospheric mountain blend

648 + 646648 + 3827

  • Use one strand of 648 with one strand of 3827 on sunlit ridges for a warm haze.
  • Switch to 646 alone for the lower shadow planes and creases.
  • Keep mountain stitches longer than foliage stitches so the background stays quiet.

Autumn foliage blend

922 + 783921 + 922730 + 921

Thread-blend one copper strand with one ochre strand for lively tree clumps. Add olive only in shaded pockets so the warm colors remain dominant.

Outlining & Detail

Selective outlining

Outline only the strongest shapes: the nearest ridge, the main shoreline, and a few foreground trunks. Use 1 strand of 898 or a softened 646 line; heavy black outlining will flatten the landscape.

Water sparkle

Add short, broken 927 stitches over 926. Keep them uneven in length and stop before the hoop edge so the lake feels reflective rather than striped.

Texture & Shading Guidance

Depth from back to front

  1. Stitch sky first with the lightest colors.
  2. Add mountains with muted grey-greens.
  3. Place the dark evergreen line next to increase distance.
  4. Build orange foliage and shoreline texture last.

Beginner-friendly control

  • Use shorter stitches in foliage; long orange stitches can snag and look flat.
  • Let some background fabric show between tree clusters for a lighter, painterly look.
  • Use a laying tool or needle tip to smooth satin areas in sky and water.
  • Step back often: landscapes need value contrast more than perfect individual stitches.

Practical Thread-Count Guide

For a 6 inch hoop

Use 2 strands for most fills, 1 strand for mountain seams, water glints, and fine trunks, and 3 strands only for a few foreground knots or heavy shore accents.

For a smaller hoop

Reduce nearly everything to 1 strand except the autumn tree masses. Replace French knots with tiny straight stitches if the design starts to feel crowded.

Simple Palette Version

For a quick beginner version, use DMC 3827, 648, 646, 926, 3362, 922, 783, and 898. This keeps the piece readable: warm sky, soft mountains, cool water, dark trees, golden foliage, and clean shoreline contrast.
