Suggested DMC Color Palette

Use the deeper colors sparingly for definition, then let the pale linen ground and white thread keep the hoop airy like the reference design.

Christmas Red
Main lighthouse stripes and roof; use 2–3 strands for strong coverage.
DMC 814
Garnet, Dark
Shadow edge of red stripes, underside of roof, tiny depth stitches.
DMC Blanc

White lighthouse bands, sea foam, short sky glints, wave crests.
DMC 310

Lantern railing, window dots, crisp separation lines; mostly 1 strand.
DMC 3821

Beacon center and the warm dashed light beams radiating from the tower.
DMC 3852

Deep sea bands nearest the rocks and lower water shadows.
DMC 3846
Bright Turquoise
Midtone water lines; alternate with darker blue-green for motion.
DMC 3845
Bright Turquoise, Medium
Upper sea highlights and small scalloped wave stitches.
DMC 3760

Foreground wave lines on pale fabric where softer blue reads better.

Secondary rock planes and blended transitions between dark and light stones.
DMC 453

Pearl Gray, Very Light
Quiet sky dash stitches and pale reflected foam around the beacon.

Stitch Map

  • Lighthouse stripes: satin stitch or long-and-short stitch following the diagonal bands. Outline first with 1 strand split stitch to keep the edges clean.
  • Lantern room: tiny satin stitches for the yellow glow, back stitch for the black rail, and single straight stitches for the railing posts.
  • Light beams: detached straight stitches or running stitch, spaced deliberately so the rays feel airy instead of heavy.
  • Rocky shore: split stitch outlines, then directional long-and-short fill inside each facet. Change stitch angle from rock to rock.
  • Water bands: rows of stem stitch, back stitch, and short scalloped running stitches. Break the lines where rocks interrupt the sea.
  • Foam: loose couching or whipped back stitch in white for the raised crest at the front of the waves.

Thread Count Guide

  • 1 strand: black windows, railings, rock cracks, fine outlines, sky dashes.
  • 2 strands: most lighthouse fill, water lines, red shadows, medium rock planes.
  • 3 strands: bold lower sea bands and the thickest white foam curve, only where extra texture is wanted.
  • Blending: combine one strand 451 + one strand 452 for middle rocks; one strand 3809 + one strand 3846 for darker water movement.

Shading, Texture & Finishing Suggestions

Keep the tower crisp

Work the lighthouse before the surrounding rocks so the red-and-white silhouette stays clean. Stitch each stripe as a separate shape, then add the black window marks last.

Build believable rocks

Choose a light source from the upper center. Put DMC 453 and 739 on top planes, 452 in the middle, and 451 or 839 under overhangs and between stones.

Let the sea breathe

Do not fill the ocean solidly. The reference relies on separated horizontal lines, so leave small gaps of fabric between rows to suggest shimmer.

Use controlled contrast

Black is powerful in this design. Reserve DMC 310 for the lantern, windows, and a few essential breaks; use dark brown for most rock outlines.

Soften the sky

Stitch pale gray and white sky marks with 1 strand so the yellow rays remain the brightest detail outside the tower.

Finish cleanly

Press from the back over a towel, then re-hoop with even tension. Trim the back only after checking that wave lines still sit straight.

Beginner-Friendly Working Order

Transfer lightly. Use a fine removable pen or light pencil; mark only the main contours, stripe edges, wave rows, and ray endpoints.
Outline the lighthouse. Stitch the tower edges, roof, deck, and windows with 1 strand before filling the red and white bands.
Fill the rocks by facet. Treat each stone as a separate shape. Vary direction to avoid one flat mass of gray.
Add ocean rows. Work from the horizon downward, alternating turquoise tones and leaving small fabric breaks for sparkle.
Place foam and rays last. These top details should sit fresh and bright on the surface, with minimal snagging from later stitching.
Practical tip: For a 6-inch hoop, keep most lines to 1–2 strands. If scaling up to 8 inches, increase water and rock fills to 3 strands selectively, but keep windows, railings, and beam dashes fine so the lighthouse remains delicate.
