Hand Embroidered Australian Shepherd Portrait with Sunflowers
A warm portrait guide for a black-tri Australian Shepherd framed by rich sunflower blooms: crisp black-and-white fur, caramel tan markings, honey-yellow petals, dark textured centers, and layered leafy greens.
Color story observed from the artwork
The reference centers on a cheerful Australian Shepherd with high-contrast black ears and mask, a clean white blaze and chest, warm copper eyebrow and cheek patches, amber eyes, a soft pink tongue, and a surrounding wreath of saturated yellow sunflowers and deep green leaves. The best finish comes from keeping the dog’s fur directional and varied, while making the sunflowers bolder and more graphic.
Use these DMC choices as a practical stitching palette rather than an exact thread chart. Adjust one step lighter or darker if your fabric is very warm, grey, or heavily textured.
Stitch map by design area
| Area | Recommended stitches | How to work it |
|---|---|---|
| Black coat and ears | Long-and-short stitch, split stitch guide lines, tiny straight stitches | Follow the natural hair growth outward from the face. Mix 310 with 3799 for depth, then add short 413 strokes only where light catches the fur tips. |
| White blaze, muzzle, chest | Single-strand long-and-short, stem stitch curves, feather stitch accents | Lay B5200 in the brightest ridges, blend 712 into warm lower shadows, and use 318 as fine cool grooves. Keep strokes uneven to avoid a striped look. |
| Tan brows and cheeks | Long-and-short stitch with curved direction changes | Start with 976 near the black mask, layer 3826 toward the rounded cheek highlights, and tuck a few 783 strokes under the muzzle for form. |
| Eyes and nose | Padded satin, tiny back stitch, French knots, single straight highlight | Make the eyes glossy with 938 and 433, then place a pinpoint of B5200. Build the nose with 310, soften with 3799, and add small 413 shine marks. |
| Sunflower petals | Fishbone stitch, satin stitch, detached straight stitches | Use 783 at the petal base, 972 through the center, and 742 on tips. Stitch each petal from base to point so the flowers radiate crisply. |
| Sunflower centers | French knots, colonial knots, seed stitch | Fill outer rings with 938, then scatter 433 knots in the center. Vary knot size by changing wrap tension, not by pulling harder. |
| Leaves and sprigs | Fishbone stitch, fly stitch, stem stitch | Use 895 in overlapped leaves behind flowers, 904 for main surfaces, and 3345 for vein highlights. Angle stitches toward the central vein. |
Blending and shading notes
Australian Shepherd fur
For realistic fur, blend by alternating thread colors in separate stitches rather than twisting many colors together. On the black areas, place 3799 between 310 and 413 so highlights feel silky. On white areas, reserve B5200 for the top ridges and use 712 plus 318 in small broken lines for dimension.
Sunflower glow
Shade each petal from dark base to bright tip: 783 at the flower center, 972 through the middle, and a short 742 stroke at the outer point. This keeps the cluster golden without flattening the petals.
Soft mouth detail
Blend 3716 and 3688 with one strand each on the tongue, then add a fine central line in a darker rose-brown if desired. Leave a small unstitched or white-highlight area for shine.
Outlining details
- Use 1-strand split stitch around the dog’s eyes, nose, and mouth for clean expression.
- Outline sunflower petal clusters with 783 only where petals overlap; a full heavy outline can make the flowers look cartoonish.
- Use 895 for leaf undersides and hidden edges, then 3345 for only the top vein lines.
- For the dog’s black mask, let directional fur stitches form the edge instead of outlining every contour.
Texture suggestions
Beginner-friendly working order
- Transfer only the essential outlines: face shape, eyes, nose, main sunflower circles, leaf stems, and petal groups.
- Stitch leaves first, then sunflower centers, then petals. This lets the dog portrait sit cleanly in front of the floral base.
- Complete the dog from dark to light: black ears and mask, tan markings, white muzzle and chest, then final eye and nose highlights.
- Press from the back on a thick towel. Do not crush knot-work in the sunflower centers.
For a confident finish, keep tension gentle, shorten stitches around curves, and step back often to check the dog’s expression before adding permanent dark outlines.
