Color mood & design read

The reference artwork is built around high contrast: near-black fabric and bark, saturated blue-green light behind the trunk, bright turquoise canopy dots, pale ghostly spirits, and small purple, pink, brown, and mossy details around the roots. Treat the center glow as the light source, then let the trunk, roots, and canopy gradually darken toward the edges.

Working order: transfer the main trunk and spirit outlines first, stitch the background glow and canopy texture next, then add bark outlines, spirits, roots, ground speckles, and final sparkle knots last.

Suggested DMC floss palette

DMC 939
Very Dark Navy Blue
Deepest bark shadows, inner trunk cuts, and the darkest root channels on black fabric.
DMC 823
Dark Navy Blue
Soft outline substitute where pure black would vanish; useful for branch silhouettes and lower canopy shadows.
DMC 3809
Very Dark Turquoise
Background aura edges, dark teal foliage, and blended bark highlights in the twisted trunk.
DMC 3848
Medium Teal Green
Main canopy texture, mid-glow behind the tree, and brighter root ridges.
DMC 3846
Light Turquoise
Bright leaf knots, spirit halos, and the strongest moonlit highlights around the trunk opening.
DMC 958
Seagreen
Pale glow on ghosts, tiny sparkles, and final high points on canopy clusters.
DMC B5200
Snow White
One-strand catchlights in spirits only; use sparingly so the teal remains dominant.
DMC 500
Very Dark Blue Green
Hanging moss, under-canopy pockets, and cool shaded forest-floor texture.
DMC 333
Very Dark Blue Violet
Mystic purple accents in roots, tiny flowers, and subtle shadows on spirit interiors.
DMC 3685
Very Dark Mauve
Pink-violet root blossoms, miniature mushrooms, and jewel dots near the base.
DMC 938
Ultra Dark Coffee Brown
Warm bark undertones and earthy separation lines around the lower roots.
DMC 783
Medium Topaz
Optional warm pinpricks at the forest floor to echo candlelight without changing the cool mood.

Roots & forest floorStem stitch, chain stitch, French knots, woven picots for larger mushroomsUse 2 strands for roots, 1 strand for tiny ground speckles. Scatter 333, 3685, 500, 783, and 3846 in small clusters.

Blending, shading & texture suggestions

Make the teal glow believableStart with darker 3809 at the outer edges, move into 3848, then reserve 3846 and 958 for the brightest halo around spirits and the central trunk opening.
Keep bark dimensionalDo not fill the whole trunk solidly. Leave tiny black gaps between dark blue, teal, and brown lines so the fabric becomes natural shadow.
Control the canopyCluster knots more densely along the upper crown and taper them near the branch openings. This prevents the top from becoming a flat turquoise block.
Use spirits as focal pointsStitch each ghost with one-strand outlines first. Add B5200 only to faces or edge highlights so they glow without looking chalky.
Add magical depthPlace small seed stitches and French knots in front of and behind the trunk. The layered dots create the misty, enchanted forest feeling.
Soften with one-strand detailsFor tiny hanging vines, root hairs, and sparkles, switch to a single strand. Fine details are what make the dark design feel polished.

Beginner-friendly practical tips

  • Use a fresh needle and keep black fabric well lit; a white cloth on your lap helps you see holes more clearly.
  • Transfer with a light-colored water-soluble or heat-erasable pen, testing first on a fabric scrap.
  • Work from the central trunk outward so the branches and roots stay aligned.
  • Use shorter floss lengths, about 14–16 inches, because dark fabric and dense knots can roughen thread.
  • For French knots, wrap once for tiny stars and twice for canopy berries or glowing foliage.
  • Step back often; on dark mystical pieces, contrast matters more than filling every space.
  • Press from the back on a padded towel when finished to protect knots and raised texture.
  • If the piece feels too bright, add a few 939 or 823 back-stitches to restore shadow and structure.
Optional specialty touch: replace a few 958 or B5200 highlights with DMC Light Effects E3849 for a subtle icy glow, but keep it minimal because metallic thread can compete with the soft spirit effect.
