DMC Palette & Stitching Suggestions
Adorable Koala Embroidery Guide
A soft woodland palette for a smiling koala hugging a textured branch, framed with eucalyptus leaves, cream blossoms, blush ear details, and fluffy grey fur.
Design Color Read
The design is built around a gentle grey koala seated on a warm brown tree branch. The main visual contrast comes from the black nose and eye details against layered silver fur, while eucalyptus greens and small cream flower clusters add natural softness around the animal.
Keep the face expressive and clean: the nose, eyes, mouth, and pink ear centers are small but high-impact areas. Use fewer strands and tighter stitch control there than on the body and branch.
Suggested DMC Floss Palette
| Area | DMC Colors | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koala light fur | B5200, 3865, 762, 415 | Highlights on ears, cheeks, belly, and fur tips | Use B5200 sparingly on the brightest ear tufts and belly lift; 762/415 make softer transitions. |
| Koala mid grey fur | 318, 414, 168 | Main fur body, head, arms, legs | Alternate direction with long-and-short stitches to create a natural fuzzy surface. |
| Koala deep shadows | 169, 3799, 535 | Ear bases, under arms, foot shadows, cheek contour | Use one strand for delicate shadow lines; avoid heavy dark blocks except near the nose and claws. |
| Nose, eyes, claws | 310, 3371, 3799, B5200 | Glossy black features and tiny white highlights | Use satin stitch for the nose, tiny French knots or seed stitches for eye highlights. |
| Ear blush & cheeks | 818, 761, 3713, 223 | Inner ears, tiny cheek marks, mouth softness | Blend 1 strand pink with 1 strand light grey for the softest inner-ear transition. |
| Tree branch bark | 433, 434, 436, 898, 938 | Main branch, bark grooves, twig stems | Work the branch in vertical/diagonal grain lines; add 938 or 898 only in the deepest cracks. |
| Eucalyptus leaves | 524, 522, 320, 319, 562, 501 | Round leaves on left sprig and long leaves on right | Use lighter greens on leaf centers and darker greens at bases and undersides. |
| Cream blossoms | 746, 739, 738, 3864 | Clustered flowers near the right sprig | Small French knots, colonial knots, or detached chain petals give a raised floral effect. |
| Hoop/fabric warmth | Ecru, 712, 822, 613 | Optional border, label, or subtle background accents | Keep background accents minimal so the koala remains the focal point. |
Stitch Plan by Design Element
Koala Fur
long-and-short stitchsplit stitch1-2 strands
- Start with split-stitch guide lines around the head, arms, belly, and legs using 1 strand of 414 or 168.
- Fill the body with long-and-short stitch following the fur direction: outward from the face, downward along the arms, and curved around the haunch.
- Use 2 strands for broad body fill, then add 1-strand wispy strokes over the top for the fuzzy koala texture.
Face, Nose & Eyes
satin stitchFrench knotsbackstitch
- Pad the nose lightly with 1 strand of 3799, then cover with smooth satin stitch in 310 for a rounded glossy finish.
- Add one tiny white straight stitch or French knot highlight to each eye; this gives the koala its lively expression.
- Use a very fine 1-strand backstitch for the smile and mouth line, softened with 818 or 761 at the lower lip.
Fluffy Ears
turkey work optionallong split stitchblended needle
- Work the inner ears with 1 strand 761 plus 1 strand 762 or 415 for a muted pink-grey blend.
- Stitch white and pale grey ear tufts outward in short feathery strokes so the edges look soft rather than circular.
- For extra dimension, add a few very short turkey-work loops around the outer ear and trim carefully.
Branch & Bark
stem stitchsplit stitchcouching
- Lay the branch grain with long split stitches in 434 and 436, following the diagonal angle of the trunk.
- Add broken darker lines in 938/898 for bark grooves, keeping them uneven for a natural wood texture.
- Use 2 strands for the main trunk and 1 strand for the twig stems to keep scale believable.
Eucalyptus Leaves

- Round leaves: use padded satin or fishbone stitch with 522/524 at the center and 320/319 near shaded edges.
- Long leaves: use fishbone stitch from the vein outward, alternating 524 and 562 for a natural eucalyptus tone.
- Stitch stems in 433 or 434 with a fine stem stitch; keep them thinner than the main branch.
Cream Flower Cluster
French knotscolonial knotslazy daisy
- Create clustered blossoms with 2-wrap French knots in 746 and 739.
- Add a few 738 knots underneath for depth and small shadow pockets.
- Use lazy daisy petals only at the outer edges so the flowers stay airy and clustered.
Thread Counts & Blending Recipes
Soft Fur Blend
Needle blend: 1 strand 318 + 1 strand 415 for the main face and belly. Switch to 1 strand 168 + 1 strand 318 for darker contour strokes.
Pink Ear Blend
Needle blend: 1 strand 761 + 1 strand 762. Use 818 alone for small highlights, and 223 only in the deepest inner-ear shadow.
Natural Leaf Blend
Needle blend: 1 strand 522 + 1 strand 524 for muted eucalyptus; add 319 or 501 for leaves tucked behind the branch.
| Area | Recommended Strands | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Face outlines, mouth, claws | 1 strand | Prevents cartoon-heavy lines and keeps tiny details crisp. |
| Main koala fur | 2 strands base + 1 strand surface strokes | Gives coverage while keeping the top layer soft and directional. |
| Nose | 2 strands satin, optional 1 strand padding | Creates smooth shine and a raised rounded shape. |
| Branch | 2 strands main grain, 1 strand dark cracks | Separates strong wood texture from fine details. |
| Leaves and flowers | 2 strands leaves, 2 strands knots | Provides visible botanical texture without overpowering the koala. |
Outlining, Shading & Detail Guidance
Outlining
- Use 1 strand 3799 or 535 only where stronger separation is needed: inside ears, nose edge, paws, and under the arm around the branch.
- Outline most fur shapes with split stitch in 168 or 414, then stitch over the line so the edge appears soft.
- For leaves, outline with a darker matching green only on the underside; leave the top edge softer for a natural light effect.
Shading
- Place darkest greys at the ear bases, under the chin, where the arm wraps behind the branch, and beneath the haunch.
- Keep the forehead and cheeks mid-light so the eyes and nose stay expressive.
- Shade the branch more deeply on the lower-left side and add a few bright 436 highlights along the upper grain.
A good rule for this design: stitch the branch first, then the back leaves and stems, then the koala body, then face details, then final surface fur strokes and flower knots. This layering helps the paws and arms sit naturally over the branch.
Practical Embroidery Tips
- Fabric: a light grey, natural linen, or off-white cotton works well. Avoid a busy fabric because the grey fur already contains many stitch directions.
- Needles: use a size 7-9 embroidery needle for most work; switch to a finer needle for 1-strand facial lines and highlights.
- Hoop tension: keep the fabric drum-tight while stitching the satin nose and bark; loose fabric can distort smooth filled areas.
- Direction matters: draw a few light guide arrows for fur direction before stitching. Curved directional stitching is what makes the koala feel rounded.
- Finishing: after stitching, steam from the back over a towel, then mount with even tension so the hoop edge stays clean and circular.
