Design color read

Hand Embroidered Koala in Hoop
Main impressionThe artwork reads as a calm koala portrait in a wooden hoop, built from cool greys, charcoal facial details, creamy highlights, eucalyptus leaves, and a lightly warm neutral background.
Best fabricUse natural linen, oatmeal cotton, or warm ivory fabric so the pale grey fur and white highlights remain visible while the greenery still feels fresh.
Stitch personalityKeep the koala plush with directional long-and-short stitch, softened split-stitch outlines, and small satin-stitch leaves for tidy contrast.

Suggested DMC palette

DMC 414 Steel Grey - Dark

Deep ear shadows, underside of muzzle, and cool fur depth where the face turns away from the light.

DMC 415 Pearl Grey

Primary koala body grey; use in 1-2 strands for soft, feathery coverage.

DMC 318 Steel Grey - Light

Fur highlights on cheeks, forehead, and ear rims; blends beautifully with 415.

DMC 3865 Winter White

Tiny eye catchlights, pale muzzle accents, and the brightest tufts of fur.

DMC 3799 Pewter Grey - Very Dark

Nose, pupils, deepest mouth line, and sparing accents inside ears.

DMC 310 Black

Only for the crispest eye dots or final nose edge; avoid overusing so the face stays soft.

DMC 3722 Shell Pink - Medium

Warm inner-ear blush and subtle cheek warmth, diluted by blending with 3865 or 318.

DMC 3052 Green Grey - Medium

Eucalyptus leaf midtone; works well for most leaves and small stems.

DMC 3053 Green Grey

Soft leaf highlights and new growth around the koala.

DMC 3011 Khaki Green - Dark

Leaf shadows, branch bases, and darker greenery near the hoop edge.

DMC 977 Golden Brown - Light

Warm branch color and wooden-hoop suggestion if included in the stitched design.

DMC 898 Coffee Brown - Very Dark

Fine branch outlines, twig tips, and grounding contrast beneath leaves.

Stitch plan

Koala fur

Use long-and-short stitch in the direction fur naturally grows: outward from the nose, around cheeks in short arcs, and down the body in soft vertical strokes. Mix 1 strand 415 with occasional 318 and 414 stitches rather than filling large blocks flat.

Ears and muzzle

Work fluffy ear edges with staggered straight stitches or turkey-work loops trimmed very lightly. Keep the muzzle smoother with satin stitch or close split stitch so it contrasts with the fuzzy ears.

Leaves and branches

Use fishbone stitch for larger eucalyptus leaves, detached chain for tiny leaves, and stem stitch for curved branches. Add one darker stitch near the base of each leaf for dimension.

Thread-count guidance

  • 1 strand: facial details, eye glints, fine fur strokes, leaf veins, and delicate nose edge corrections.
  • 2 strands: most fur filling, leafy shapes, stem stitch outlines, and balanced color transitions.
  • 3 strands: only for bold outer foliage or heavier branch accents; it can overpower the koala features.
  • 6 strands: optional French knots for textured flower centers or decorative berries if the pattern includes them.
Beginner shortcut: outline the koala lightly in split stitch first, fill the main grey areas with short directional stitches, then add the darkest and lightest details last. This keeps the face readable even if the shading is simple.

Blending, shading, and texture notes

  • Soft grey blend: pair one strand DMC 415 with one strand DMC 318 for cheek highlights; pair 415 with 414 for shaded cheek and ear depth.
  • Warm ear blend: use one strand 3722 with one strand 318 for a muted pink-grey that will not look too bright.
  • Leaf variation: alternate 3052 and 3053 on neighboring leaves, then add 3011 to leaves tucked behind the koala.
  • Nose finish: fill with padded satin stitch in 3799, then add a tiny 3865 highlight on the upper curve.
  • Outlining: use split stitch in 414 for the koala outline; reserve 3799 for eyes, nose, and the deepest separations.
  • Fur texture: break the outline with a few single-strand flyaway stitches, especially around ears and cheeks.
  • Background control: leave negative space around the koala’s face so the portrait feels airy inside the hoop.
  • Hoop polish: press from the back on a towel to protect raised knots and satin stitches.

Beginner-friendly working order

  1. Transfer the pattern lightly; mark only essential fur direction arrows so the face does not become crowded.
  2. Stitch branches first, then leaves, so greenery sits neatly behind the koala.
  3. Fill the koala’s mid-grey base with 2 strands of DMC 415 using short directional stitches.
  4. Add shadows with 414 and highlights with 318/3865, always using fewer stitches than the base layer.
  5. Finish eyes, nose, and tiny facial lines last; a single dark stitch can change the expression, so check symmetry before knotting off.
